This local town was established in the 13th century. It is situated in the valley of the river upa. There are many places to see. The most interesting are: the Church of teh Assumption of Holy virgin. Built in the late Baroque, square with many baroque ans Renaissance houses some of them with arcades. there is also the Town Hall built in the pseudo-gothic style and pseudo-gothic evangelical church. There is the Museum of Podkrkonosi (region below the Giant Mountains) situated in the former Renaissance castle.

History:
In the year 1866 there was the battle between Austrian and Prussian armies. This event is reminded by 20 m high cast iron monument of the General Gablenz which is situated on the hill Sibenik.
