Olivetská kaple

Olivetská chapel was built by request of Jan Finger, a Hostinné citizen, in 1777. František Matzak of Ottenburg came up with the idea and was the main patron of its construction.

The interior of the chapel is decorated with five sandstone, plychrome, life-size statues. They are the praying Jesus on the Olivetska Mtn., kneeling in front of an angel statue. The angel holds in his hands a cross and the chalice of bitterness, symbolizing Jesus' sacrifice. The scene is completed with three apostles sleeping on a rocky base: St. Petr, St. John and St. Jacob. The group of statues is, with high probability, the work of artist Martin Jelínek Jr.

The baroque fresco represents the contryside around Jerusalem and depicts Judas and a group of soldiers taking the arrested Jesus out of the town gates. The fresco was plastered and painted over in the second half of the 19th century. The original fresco from 1777 was discovered during restoration works in 2001 and fully restored.

The Olivetská chapel is registred as a national cultural heritage and it is evaluated by experts as a unique architectural jewel, considered the most valuable of its kind in the central Europe.
